OUR HISTORY

Our Story

Behind the Bit has provided a safe haven for over 300 horses and ponies since its establishment.

Canada alone sees nearly 75,000 horses slaughtered every year, generating millions of dollars. We’re committed to offering alternative options.

Unfortunately many horses end up in slaughterhouses even though their owners didn’t intend for it to happen. Owners in financial difficulties may send horses to auctions in hopes of finding them a new home. However, even well-loved and well-trained horses may still end up in the kill pen. Age doesn’t matter to meat buyers either, as even foals at their mother’s sides are sent to the slaughterhouse.

At Behind the Bit our motto is: “Be the change you want to see in the world”

We aim to provide a safe and ethical alternative for horse and pony owners, rather than sending them to auctions where they may be at risk of being shipped for meat. We do our best to give these animals a second chance. Specializing in the rescue, rehabilitation, and retraining horses and ponies to give them a second chance at life, whether as riding horses, companions, or pasture pets.

Many horses and ponies find amazing homes, while others stay with us permanently due to medical issues, age, or if they enter one of our non-riding programs. These animals that participate in our programs assist us in continuing our efforts by generating income to support their herd mates and ongoing rescue missions.

Despite having our programs, we still struggle to meet our minimum expenses every year. We therefore heavily rely on events, fundraisers, and the generosity of supporters who believe in our cause.

Behind the Bit relies solely on volunteers. Our fantastic team of 20+ volunteers generously donate their time to assist with day-to-day operations and the rehabilitation process.
